David, from what you say, I am most happy to respect Capsguy's "Russian shelf," but I spent a couple of weeks studying "Lolita" in an American novel course here at the U of MN. Aside from the fact that the English Dept. classified it as an American novel, if you read it you simply have to (IMHO) agree that it is an American novel. "A First Russian Vocabulary" is aimed primarily at the beginner and aims to balance the conflicting claims of accessibility and thoroughness. It contains some 2, words ordered alphabetically, lists irregularities of form and stress and includes a repeat list of basic common words; where appropriate, it also supplies American equivalents.
